Vaccinations

We recommend only doing two vaccines in one visit, any other needed vaccinations can be given 2 weeks later. This is to help avoid the possibility of vaccine reactions.

Core vaccinations are vital to all pets based on the risk of exposure, severity of disease or transmissibility to humans. Lifestyle vaccinations are recommended based on your pet’s individual lifestyle.

We like all puppies and kittens to have 3 rounds of deworming (for intestinal parasite). Dewormers can only kill certain life stages of the worms, so a series of dewormings is necessary. These are given at two week intervals.

Puppies and kittens require multiple exams during their course of vaccinations. They are growing at a rapid rate, and we want to make sure that they are healthy enough to vaccinate. It is the same reason babies are examined when they are vaccinated.

Dog Core Vaccinations:

  • Rabies: Initial vaccination is given when puppy is 14-16 weeks of age, and boostered in a year with a 3 year vaccine
  • DHPP (distemper): First given when puppy is 6-8 weeks of age, and boostered every 3-4 weeks after that until the puppy reaches 14-16 weeks of age. Then is given again in 1 year, and then is given every 2 years after.

  • Bordetella (kennel cough): Can be given after 8 weeks of age, then is done yearly. (We use the nasal vaccination)
