Vaccinations

We recommend only doing two vaccines in one visit, any other needed vaccinations can be given 2 weeks later. This is to help avoid the possibility of vaccine reactions.

Core vaccinations are vital to all pets based on the risk of exposure, severity of disease or transmissibility to humans. Lifestyle vaccinations are recommended based on your pet’s individual lifestyle.

We like all puppies and kittens to have 3 rounds of deworming (for intestinal parasites). Dewormers can only kill certain life stages of the worms, so a series of dewormings is necessary. These are given at two week intervals.

Puppies and kittens require multiple exams during their course of vaccinations. They are growing at a rapid rate, and we want to make sure that they are healthy enough to vaccinate. It is the same reason babies are examined when they are vaccinated.

Dog Core Vaccinations:

  • Rabies: Initial vaccination is given when puppy is ~16 weeks of age, and boostered in a year with a 3 year vaccine.
    • This is required by both state & federal law.
  • DHPP (Distemper/Parvo): First given when puppy is 6-8 weeks of age, followed by boosters every 3-4 weeks after that until the puppy reaches ~16 weeks of age. A booster is given again in 1 year, and then is given every 3 years after.

Dog Lifestyle Vaccinations:

  • Bordetella (Kennel cough): Can be given after 8 weeks of age, then is done yearly. (We use the oral vaccination).
    • Recommended for any dog going to boarding, grooming, training, daycare, or other areas where dogs gather.
  • Leptospirosis (Lepto): Initial vaccination can be given after 8 weeks of age, a booster is given 3-4 weeks after, then boostered yearly.
    • Recommended for any dog that lives near water or rodents.
  • Lyme: Initial vaccination can be given after 8 weeks of age, a booster is given 3-4 weeks after, then boostered yearly.
    • Recommended for any dog not on year-round tick prevention or has increased tick exposure, such as hunting, camping, hiking, etc.
  • Canine Influenza: Initial vaccination can be given after 6 weeks of age, booster is given 2-4 weeks after, then is done yearly - We do NOT currently offer this vaccine.

Cat Core Vaccinations:

  • Rabies: First given when kitten is ~16 weeks of age, and then given every year after that.
    • This is required by both state & federal law.
  • FVRCP (Distemper): First given when kitten is 6-8 weeks of age, followed by boosters every 3-4 weeks after that until the kitten reaches ~16 weeks of age. Then is given again in 1 year, and then is given every 3 years after.

Cat Lifestyle Vaccinations:

  • FeLV (feline leukemia): Initial vaccination can be given after 8 weeks of age, a booster is given 3-4 weeks after, then is done yearly.
    • This is recommended for outdoor cats, or cats that will be exposed to new or foster cats.
